I grew up reading National Geographic, so I’d beat myself up if I’d turned down their offer. I looove culture especially when it comes to Singapore’s, and even offered to interview all kinds of people—peranakans, dancers, soy sauce makers—just to add an authentic spin to what tradition really means, from their own perspectives.
My angle wasn’t just to celebrate heritage by itself and just to shine a single spotlight on it. Heritage needs some sort of modernity to thrive in this era, to stay relevant to people and to give old a new meaning.
Whether it’s to use VR to tell the story of a fishing village, or to use actors to portray characters from the 1960s, bringing year-old stories and new-day technology together could—should?—be a promising approach when it comes to preserving heritage.
